A55 Knock Road – Traffic Signal Sequencing at Shandon Park and Sandown Road

Letter from Dept of Infrastructure – MT 128637-21 A55 Knock Road at Sandown Road and Shandon Park

A55 KNOCK ROAD, BELFAST – REQUEST FOR AMENDED TRAFFIC SIGNAL SEQUENCING AT SHANDON PARK AND SANDOWN ROAD.

Thank you for your email of 4 October 2021 regarding your request for a change to the traffic light sequence at the junction of Sandown Road and Shandon Park.

We are aware of the issues between traffic emerging from Sandown Road and Shandon Park. However, generally, the current traffic signalling arrangements cope well with the traffic movements and large volume of vehicles that use this junction on a daily basis.

We have previously considered splitting the Shandon Park and Sandown Road traffic movements into separate stages within the junction. However, a traffic modelling survey of this arrangement indicated that it would result in a large increase in queues on the A55 Knock Road and we therefore considered that this arrangement was not
appropriate. This remains the case.

Whilst the comments and concerns of the residents’ association have been noted, we have no plans introduce a separate traffic signal sequence for Sandown Road and Shandon Park, at this time.

In the past we amended the road markings for motorists emerging from Sandown Road and Shandon Park to try and highlight the presence of on-coming traffic. I will arrange for these road markings to be refreshed and we will investigate if there are any additional measures that can be introduced to deal with this issue.
